But he battled out of the first inning, and he's always had a lot of heart, and that's what we're getting.' Judge supplied the fireworks with his fifth-inning blast into the last rows of the upper deck in left field off Mariners rookie Andrew Moore, his Major League-leading 31st home run of the year.

Judge also had a sacrifice fly in the third as he hiked his season RBI total to 72, two behind American League leader Nelson Cruz of the Mariners. 'Tonight's ballgame was about a couple big hits that they got and we didn't,' said Mariners manager Scott Servais. 'Andrew Moore obviously made the mistake to Judge and Judge is having a phenomenal season and is a very talented young guy. Bad pitch in a bad spot and a bad result, and that got us behind the eight-ball a little there.' .

Kyle Seager reached base three times, on a single, walk and hit by pitch, and he drove in Seattle's lone run with a first-inning infield hit, but the Mariners fell to 48-50 and 3 1/2 games back of the Yankees (50-45) in the chase for the second AL Wild Card spot. 'He hit it pretty good,' Seager said of Judge's blast. 'It was definitely a big swing in the game. It was a real tight game, and that kind of opens it up. The way CC was throwing and their bullpen, that's a pretty tough hill to climb.' .

David Robertson made his first relief appearance for the Yankees since being acquired from the White Sox and struck out the side in the seventh. Tommy Kahnle, obtained in the same deal, set the Mariners down in order in the sixth after replacing Sabathia following a leadoff walk to Seager. 'We just have to get a few runs for our starter, then after five innings we can just hand it off to our bullpen,' Judge said. 'With the guys we got now, and the ones we already had, we've got one of the best bullpens in the game right now.'

. MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Judge unloads: The big Yankees rookie broke out of his recent cold spell when he unleashed on a 2-1 curve from Moore and gave a souvenir to a fan in the upper reaches of Safeco's left-field deck.

The fan chose to throw the ball back on the field, but that didn't slow Judge as he circled the bases for the 31st time this season. The 25-year-old had gone just 6-for-36 with no extra-base hits and two RBIs over his previous 10 games. Judge went 1-for-2 with a walk and sacrifice fly to put his average at.313 on the year. 'I've definitely seen what he can do, said Mariners left fielder Ben Gamel, who spent the previous three seasons coming up in the Minors with Judge in the Yankees' system.

'He put a good swing on it. He's 6-8 and 290 pounds. That's a lot of force.' . The 'other' rookie did OK, too: Yankees left fielder Clint Frazier, playing just his 14th game since being called up, drove in his team's first run with a third-inning double. But the 22-year-old flashed some leather as well with a nice diving catch to rob Mike Zunino in the second inning.

Frazier didn't get a great jump on the looping line drive, but he made up ground in a hurry and recorded what labeled a three star catch, with a 71 percent catch probability. With Ben Gamel on second after a leadoff double, that play helped Sabathia get out of that inning with no damage. 'That was incredible,' Judge said of Frazier's catch.

'Off the bat I didn't think he had a chance, but with his speed he can catch anything out there. He's an athlete, he's got speed and it was impressive. It was really impressive.' QUOTABLE 'We had a few chances, didn't get a big hit early to kind of get the ball rolling and their bullpen is really good.

They've obviously picked up a couple guys in the last couple weeks to shorten the game, and tonight it was a big benefit for them.' - Servais, on the Yankees' revamped bullpen 'It takes sometime to get comfortable in the outfield in the big leagues, especially with a different feel every three or four days. When they put the ceiling on top of us, that was different. I've seen that midgame go across. Looked like an alien up there.' -Frazier, on the retractable roof at Safeco covering the stadium after the sixth inning SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS After starting the season with a 25-12 record at home, the Mariners have now lost 11 of their last 13 games at Safeco and are 0-2 on this homestand after opening the second half with a 5-1 road trip through Chicago and Houston.

This is the first book I've read by Robert van Gulik.

It contains two murder mysteries that are solved by Judge Dee. The first starts with the murder from the murderer's point of view.

This sets the whole pond of frogs croaking, which sets up such a racket that the murderer runs away before the household is alerted. Even though he escapes, ultimately the frogs will prove his undoing. Who is the murderer and why did he do it?

The second story is very brief. A young boy comes running to Judge Dee. He is crying that his father killed his mother. Judge Dee returns to the house and finds the rooms covered in blood. The mystery's solution is as surprising as it is original.

You'll have to read the story to find out what I mean. Judge Dee was an actual Judge in China in 600AD.

As a rule a magistrate’s term of office was three years. But at the end of the year A.D. 674, when Judge Dee had been serving four years in Lan-fang, there was still no news from the capital. I haven't read Judge Dee before, so I was quite happy to find two of his stories released as an ebook.

' I should say before I start that I don't have any experience with Chinese mysteries. Apart from the TVB dramas 'A Pillowcase of Mystery' and 'Xi Yuan Lu', I have no idea what ancient China was like and how they solved crimes back then. The first story was definitely interesting, and more like a Western mystery than I expected. It's got a twist, a almost super-sleuth, a beautiful young woman, etc. I guess some things really do transcend culture. I thought Mrs. Meng was an interesting character - even though she's not the main character (not even close to it), she's essentially the hooker with a heart of gold character, and I would have liked to see more of her.

Murder on New Year's Eve First line of Murder on New Year's Eve: 'When Judge Dee had put away the last file and locked the drawer of his desk he suddenly shivered.' Just finished the second story, and it's really very charming. I won't give the ending away, but I had a smile on my face at the end of it. Oh, and the start, where they mention his three wives really reminded me of Xi Yuan Lu - specifically the ending of the first season, where Song Ci ends up with his two wives. And that's all I wanted to say - that I was reminded of it. This story starts with what looks like a murder, and the lonely Judge Dee goes and investigates right away. One thing leads to another hahaha.

Really can't say without giving it away. By the way, you really shouldn't read the starting note for this, because it does give the twist away. Or at least, that's what I thought when I read it after the story (didn't read it before). Oh, and I realise that I'm really not used to how they transliterated the Chinese here haha. It's quite different from the hanyu pinyin that I'm used too.

That said, I would totally read more of Judge Dee. These stories are short and satisfying, and I would like to see if by reading more, certain characters would be more fleshed out. This review was first posted. So, I had this notion that I wanted to read.

In the book Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee (Dee Goong An), the main character is Judge Dee, a magistrate in China’s Tang dynasty. The roles of a magistrate include but are not limited to, being a judge, detective, jury and police officer. The book follows three of Judge Dee’s cases, the Case of the Double Murder at Dawn, the Case of the Strange Corpse, and the Case of the Poisoned Bride. In order to be a distinguished and powerful magistrate, one must lead with Confucian and Legalist values. Judge Dee is an effective magistrate because he blends both Confucian and Legalist values seamlessly, and is well aware of the Tang dynasty’s social hierarchy. Firstly, Judge Dee represents Confucian values. One value that he flawlessly portrays is filial piety, or respect for one’s family members, especially elders. He shows leniency to Mrs. Djou because she has to care for her mother-in-law, admitting:“A criminal who still has an old parent to support, may be treated with special leniency… When you have confessed, I must, of course, propose the capital…show more content…
An example of Judge Dee acknowledging his Confucian and Legalist traits is with Doctor Tang. He notes that Doctor Tang could have been “severely punished as an accessory”, but he only lightly punishes him (208). Judge Dee is able to be Confucian’s junzi, or “perfect gentleman”, while maintaining Legalism’s firmness and harsh punishments. At the beginning of the Case of the Strange Corpse, he uses his knowledge from Confucian studies to pose as a doctor, and his mutual responsibility as a Legalist government official is put into use when a mute girl comes to him. Judge Dee believes he is witnessing the aftermath of a crime, and this eventually leads him to his next case, showing readers that Judge Dee is most effective when he mixes his Confucian and Legalist
