Backing up data from optical discs can be usually done by simply copying the content to a hard disc or onto a new CD or DVD. Sometimes, though, especially when dealing with copy-protected discs, a dedicated software solution is the only way to carry out such a task.
Among the plethora of utilities that are built especially for this job, SmartRipper is a special type of tool that aims to offer several approaches to DVD ripping. The first impression, though is not something that could be called a pleasant encounter, mainly because front-end is not at all appealing, in fact, is seems a bit clumsy.
Depending on the type of DVD you're using, the access/read time could be rather high, especially if the disc is filled to the brim with data. Oftentimes prone to errors of various kinds, the process of getting the content and making it ready to be saved to a different location or media lacks somewhat of the fluency that other similar programs have.

Divided into three distinct areas, 'Movie', 'Files' and 'Backup', the operation modes of SmartRipper come with different settings and options. The only thing they have in common is the target setting area, which his placed on the lower side of the main window.
Insofar as the options for video, file and backup are concerned, they have a distinct section where you will be able to configure the key-check method, VOB file access, file splitting, and maximum file size.
All things considered, SmartRipper may have been a strong competitor back in the day, but nowadays it simply cannot match the capabilities and ease of use that can be found in many similar applications. It throws too many errors and sometimes is unable to detect either the DVD or the optical drive altogether, so it's best to try something else if you're looking for a fast and accurate DVD ripper.
